I'm a firm believer that people with their roots in Appalachia carry something deep inside their souls that begin to define them more and more as they encounter the rest of the world. At least that seems to be true in my life. Throughout my adult years of moving all over the south and traveling around the world, there's something about Western North Carolina that I just can never shake. Maybe it's the generations of my family living in a little mountain cove. Maybe it's the hand-me-down sense of songwriting or the figure-it-out-yourself way of learning to play instruments. Whatever it is, it has defined my art and even when producing music for other genres somehow finds a way to leave its ever so subtle thumbprint.
